Stardate

Two kinds of Stardate formula are use within SOULTREK posting. One in the post header and one in the storytelling part of a post. Both are not very difficult to use, as long as you know the purpose of them and the way they work. Although it is not terrible if you use stardates wrongly, it is our goal to let everyone work with them in the correct way.

STARDATES IN THE POST HEADER

This is the easiest one of the two. It basically indicates the date and time you started writing your post. It helps people to find the order in which to read posts when you get several ones which should be read in a certain order. Imagine you have been away for a week and have to start reading the received posts. It helps to know where to start.

YMMDD.HHMM is the proper notation. Y is the last digit of the year you wrote your post, 0 for 2000, 1 for 2001. MM is the month 01 for January, 02 for February. DD most surprisingly indicates days: 01 to 31 depending on the month. After the dot the exact time should be noted, using army time notation (a 24 hour clock). For those of you who do not know how that works. Just don't stop counting after 12.00 o'clock at noon. 1 o'clock PM is 13.00 hrs. 4 o'clock PM is 16.00 untill you reach 23.59 as one minute before midnight (which is 00.00 hrs in the 24 hours time notation).

The proper way to notate 4.32 PM on the 22nd day of January in 2001 would be: 10122.1632.

STARDATES IN A STORY

A commonly made mistake is to use post-header stardates in the posts as well. Contrary to the above mentioned, story-stardates are used to indicate progress of time in the SOULTREK universe. Story-stardates are also used for the time table in a persons bioprofile. Because it's never been made really clear what year SOULTREK is playing in and everyone tends to use their own interpretation it might be a good idea to set a standard. Therefore it might be necessary for members to make corrections in their bioprofiles according to the following explanation.

To help understand the workings it's best to know that it has nothing to do with the way Paramount uses stardates in either of the Startrek franchises. The current year in Startrek is 2373 (5th season Deep Space Nine/3rd season Voyager). Because people like to refer to the current events in either of the series it's best to place SOULTREK in the same time period.

YYYYMMDD.HHMM is the correct format for these kind of stardates. Since 2373 is the current year in Star-/Soultrek the 6th day of August would be 23730806. After the dot a time could be placed, again using army time notation. For an explanation see above.

Basically years are just year, months are months and days are days. If your character is 20 years old at the moment and born on the 15th of May, the correct way to notate the day (s)he was born would be 23530515. If (s)he was born at 10 o'clock PM you should write the complete stardate as 23530515.2200.

We certainly hope this page has helped you to understand the workings of stardates used within the SOULTREK organization. If you still have questions you are of course welcome to contact us. Try to describe what exactly you do not understand, so we can help you best.
