When he Graduated High school David thought about it a long time and decided to follow in his father's footsteps and join Starfleet but like with his father He knew that his grandpa would not have it that way so he was nervous when he decided to tell him. When David told him about his desire to be in Starfleet he was totally against it but David already had made up his mind. On the day he got his acceptance letter he received bad news that his Grandfather was severely ill and near death and that he called for David to see him. When he arrived at the house he found his grandfather near his time and motioned his hand for David come near him. His grandfather with the little strength he had left told him these words:
"David the Gods of the tribe have called me to
the sky so I
have very little time here
I
know
I
said against your wanting to join Starfleet but
I
was wrong like your father,
you just wanted to help your fellow man and like your father I
can't change your mind.
But when you do
leave your home to go out into the world,
always remember where you come from." With
that his Grandfather reached over to the
side drawer on the bed and
pulled out an antique wooden keepsake box. He
handed it to David
and said "this will help you
remember
it always". David opened the box up and took out a dark crimson red hawk
feather with
some beadwork and thread at the tip.
"This
was your father's
when he was a little boy,
in his last will he told me to leave it to you I
had almost forgotten it till now.
Use
this to let others know that you're
proud of your family and heritage."
Ever since that moment he has worn
the feather even when it almost got him in trouble with the
Commandant of the
Academy
but after making a strong statement before the review board about his beliefs
the board told him that he could wear it only if it were tied around the back of
his hair so it would out of the way of his face. The day he graduated he also
requested to add his Native American name Redfeather to the graduate rolls.
1) Talents: David has an unusual kinship toward animals. Excellent outdoor survival skills. Basic First aid and CPR.
2) Traditions: Tries to make a pilgrimage back to the Wyoming open lands and camp out for a week to live off the land and meditate.
